SUNDAY ON THE ROCKS

By Theresa Rebeck

“Sunday on the Rocks” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We are on sacred ground. Northwestern University is on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. Before it was stolen from them through colonization and forced removal, this land was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other native tribes. The state of Illinois is still home to more than 100,000 tribal members. In the spirit of healing and making amends for the harm that was done, we acknowledge the native and indigenous peoples who called this land home. We pledge ourselves as members of the Northwestern School of Communication to turn our statements into action and build better relationships with native and indigenous communities in Evanston, in Chicago, and throughout the region.

RESOURCES AT NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY

CAPS: COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
  •  CAPS serves as the primary mental health service at Northwestern University with offices on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses. CAPS provides a set of core services, including clinical services, educational workshops, and consultation with faculty, staff, and parents.
CARE: CENTER FOR AWARENESS, RESPONSE & EDUCATION
  • The mission of CARE is to create a culture of healthy sexuality at Northwestern University where sexual violence, relationship violence, and stalking are not tolerated. CARE is a confidential space for students impacted by sexual violence, relationship violence or stalking, including friends or partners of survivors.
AOD: ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG RESOURCES
  • The Alcohol and Other Drug Resources website provides Northwestern students, parents, faculty, staff, and neighbors with a centralized hub for information, policies, programs, and services related to alcohol and other drugs. It represents the work of numerous campus partners who share the goal of supporting students in making responsible decisions about alcohol and other drugs, including low-risk use and non-use, to keep the Northwestern community safer and healthier.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Have you ever been curious about what we women talk about when no man is listening? What are the real questions that keep us up at night? This play shows in great detail and with a lot of humor the deep concerns that women face everyday of their lives. This comedy unfolds what guilt, doubt, shame, honesty, compassion and support looks like for four women in 1994 –but believe me when I tell you things have not really changed.

For Elly, Gayle, Jen, and Jessica, a Sunday on the Rocks isn’t just a day of pleasure or an excuse to drink—it’s the perfect time to take control of their lives and face the reality of what making a choice actually looks like. Every small action they take on that day is ultimately a step forward in making progressively difficult decisions, in a world where those decisions seem to have been taken by them already. And like many of us in 2024, they’re on a constant quest for full autonomy over their bodies, their relationships and their lives, without the fear of consequences.

In a country like the United States, where it seems that it is increasingly difficult to exist as a woman, this play is a call to realize that the fight for our full agency still has much to achieve. But, this can only happen when women are supporting and listening to each other, when they are sharing the experiences that made them feel less valuable, and when they are leaving aside judgment to ultimately find bravery in each other’s experiences.

Mariana Parejo Molinares, Director
