A TALE OF PETER RABBIT

By Trista Baldwin

Adapted from the book by Beatrix Potter

Directed by Tor Campbell

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We are on sacred ground. Northwestern University is on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. Before it was stolen from them through colonization and forced removal, this land was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other native tribes. The state of Illinois is still home to more than 100,000 tribal members. In the spirit of healing and making amends for the harm that was done, we acknowledge the native and indigenous peoples who called this land home. We pledge ourselves as members of the Northwestern School of Communication to turn our statements into action and build better relationships with native and indigenous communities in Evanston, in Chicago, and throughout the region.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When I read this script, I saw more than a bunny tale. I saw a meditation on resistance. On memory. On how children inherit the courage to confront the stories written about them and choose something braver.

That line — “You have to be brave, and be willing to lose something for your Freedom” — says everything. Because freedom always costs. And yet, it’s worth it. Our ancestors knew that. Our younger selves knew that.

So this story, while whimsical, carries weight. It’s about rewriting the narratives that misnamed us. It’s about claiming your space, even when it’s scary. And for every person who’s ever been told they don’t belong — in books, in families, in history — this play whispers back: You do.

May these brave bunnies remind us all: sometimes, losing your coat is the start of finding yourself.

Tor Campbell, Director
