AUDIO DESCRIPTIONS

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We are on sacred ground. Northwestern University is on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. Before it was stolen from them through colonization and forced removal, this land was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other native tribes. The state of Illinois is still home to more than 100,000 tribal members. In the spirit of healing and making amends for the harm that was done, we acknowledge the native and indigenous peoples who called this land home. We pledge ourselves as members of the Northwestern School of Communication to turn our statements into action and build better relationships with native and indigenous communities in Evanston, in Chicago, and throughout the region.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

What is your relationship to the unknown? If you’re anything like me, you might struggle with the incredibly painful feeling of uncertainty. This play is a meditation on how we as human beings handle the unknown. Our story begins at a time of peace for these women, each member of this community knows what life beyond the safety of Shaker village brings. Each has faced the most horrific sides of humanity. They all have trauma they are running from, and know just how dangerous the outside world can be.

At the beginning of this story, the women are set in their religious ways: ruled by tradition, simplicity and humility. Their commitment to God has developed into a predictable lifestyle. Small, yet safe. And yet, just beyond the borders of their home lurks the meadow, the wild unknown, threatening the very way of life that has been their source of survival. What is out there in the meadow…are they angels, demons, a person trying to take advantage of the community’s most vulnerable, or is it all a lie?

We desperately need to learn to develop a relationship with not knowing, of releasing control and embracing the reality of our own humanity- even knowing it can harm us. We are small, and we are scared: of making the wrong choices, of being hurt, of losing everything we love. As the meadow teaches us throughout this story,  there is no simple answer.

Our brains love simplicity – clear divides that tell us what is good and bad, right and wrong, safe and dangerous. What happens when we embrace the nuance, when we finally face the reality of the unknown without hiding? How might we choose surrender over control, humility over arrogance, gentleness over oppression? Hidden within this beautiful, exciting story are the answers, I think. I hope this play teaches you as much as it taught me; about embracing both the beauty and terror of the meadow. My invitation as you watch this play is to hold the mystery – for in the holding of nuance we become more human, more in touch with our smallness, our gentleness, our infallibility.

Francesca Patrón, Director
