LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We are on sacred ground. Northwestern University is on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. Before it was stolen from them through colonization and forced removal, this land was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other native tribes. The state of Illinois is still home to more than 100,000 tribal members. In the spirit of healing and making amends for the harm that was done, we acknowledge the native and indigenous peoples who called this land home. We pledge ourselves as members of the Northwestern School of Communication to turn our statements into action and build better relationships with native and indigenous communities in Evanston, in Chicago, and throughout the region.

DIRECTOR/DRAMATURG NOTE

How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is a tale of power, romance, and the thrill of climbing to the top. This musical by Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows has entertained audiences for decades with its jazzy satire of corporate life. You might know it from its 1967 film adaptation or its celebrity runs with Matthew Broderick and Daniel Radcliffe. Or maybe from its musical gems – from the zany “Coffee Break” to the show-stopping “Brotherhood of Man.”

But how do we tell this story in 2026?

Although the game of success seems quite different than it was sixty, forty, even ten years ago, How to Succeed argues that the core remains the same: put on the right tricks, say the right names, and you just might scheme your way to the executive boardroom.

But how does such success change a person?

What allows for these social loopholes?

And ultimately, what does the relentless pursuit of success cost all of us?

Like young Finch, our How To Succeed is ambitious. In centering the dicey gender dynamics and taking inspiration from the 1980s “cult of success,” we’ve created a version of the show that allows us to see ourselves better. Through deep collaboration, our creative team and talented cast have brought this transformative vision to life.

We hope our How to Succeed gets you not just singing and laughing, but thinking and talking.

Juniper Viernes (Dramaturg) and Christopher Michael Richardson (Director)
