LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We are on sacred ground. Northwestern University is on the traditional homelands of the people of the Council of Three Fires—the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa—as well as the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations. Before it was stolen from them through colonization and forced removal, this land was a site of trade, travel, gathering, and healing for more than a dozen other native tribes. The state of Illinois is still home to more than 100,000 tribal members. In the spirit of healing and making amends for the harm that was done, we acknowledge the native and indigenous peoples who called this land home. We pledge ourselves as members of the Northwestern School of Communication to turn our statements into action and build better relationships with native and indigenous communities in Evanston, in Chicago, and throughout the region.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When I first saw the Addams Family Musical, it was not in a professional setting, but rather in a high school auditorium, presented by the school’s drama club. I sat surrounded by proud parents, students, children, and grandparents buzzing about seeing these iconic characters come to life. The orchestra got settled, the audience got quiet, the overture began the very familiar “dun dun dun dun-,” and with no hesitation, every single person around me lifted their hands and responded to the four notes with *Snap Snap.* It was a moment of pure unity in a matter of seconds. Admittedly, it took me by surprise and I realized that not many things in our culture can invoke a call and response like that. For children, it may be “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands *clap clap!*” For adults, it may be “Sweet Caroline — *bum bum bum* — good times never seemed so good!” But for people of all ages, it’s the Addams Family melody and characters that provide a common ground.

That moment was a reminder of the power and nostalgia the Addams Family have had for close to 100 years. Whether you know them from the original comics, the 1960’s TV show, the films, or the Netflix series Wednesday, we all have our individual history with this creepy and kooky family. How special that today we all get to sit in a space together and find unity through commonality. A sentiment that, I believe, is a the core of who the Addams Family is. Everyone is a friend to an Addams, and today, you are seen and welcomed with open arms. Welcome to the family!

*Snap Snap*

– Christopher Llewyn Ramirez, Director

NORTHWESTERN ROOTS IN THE SHADOWS OF THE ADDAMS FAMILY

Before The Addams Family musical became a Broadway hit with over 1,000 productions worldwide, its composer and lyricist Andrew Lippa found creative ground at Northwestern University. In 2006, Lippa premiered his musical Asphalt Beach on the Wirtz Center’s Josephine Louis Stage, produced by the American Music Theater Project (AMTP) under the artistic direction of Stuart Oken—who would later go on to produce The Addams Family musical itself.

That pivotal collaboration helped pave the way for Lippa’s involvement in the spooky, kooky world of the Addamses. Since then, Lippa has remained a vital part of Northwestern’s musical theater ecosystem, serving as a Master Teacher for the Johnny Mercer Songwriting Workshop a dozen times and mentoring students in the Theatre Department’s “Creating the Musical” module as recently as winter 2023.
This fall, as Northwestern stages The Addams Family, the production comes full circle—celebrating not only the iconic characters but also the university’s deep ties to the musical’s creative origins.

Join us for a special post-show conversation on Friday, November 21st with H. Kevin Miserocchi, Executive Director of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, who will share insights into the legacy of Charles Addams and the enduring charm of his macabre creations.

H. Kevin Miserocchi (Executive Director – Tee and Charles Addams Foundation) graduated from the Greenwich, Connecticut school system in 1966. He pursued careers in education, travel, and the arts, holding positions with the American Institute for Foreign Study, New York Graphic Society, and Stolt-Nielsen Chartering. Relocating to Long Island in 1978, Kevin worked with The Parrish Art Museum and The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons. A close friend of Tee and Charles Addams, he now serves as Trustee and Executive Director of the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation, overseeing its archives, exhibitions, and Addams Family intellectual property.
